Fishing Lake Powell

Fishing with Angling Arizona

Types of game fish:

• Largemouth Bass:

The largemouth bass is the most sought after game fish on Lake Powell. The spawning normally takes place in April, May, and June, but largemouth fishing is good throughout the year. The usually crystal clear water often enables anglers to see these beauties attack. The lake record largemouth took the prize at 10-lbs.2 oz. The bag limit is 5 fish.

• Smallmouth Bass:

These feisty fighters were introduced to Lake Powell in recent years and are thriving. Because of the rockslides from Lake Powell’s majestic cliff walls, the habitat for smallmouth is ideal. The lake record smallmouth weighed 5 lbs. 1 oz. The bag limit is 20 fish.

• Striped Bass:

There is no limit to the number of these fish you can catch. These fish will put up a good fight for the angler. They are often found ‘boiling’ the water following schools of shad. The record striped bass caught on Lake Powell weighed in at 48lb. 11oz.

Walleye:

These sharp-toothed game fish are native to Lake Powell. The shade from the towering walls that line Lake Powell provide the environment these sensitive-eyed game fish need. There are plenty of rock and gravel beds for their spawn in March. The lake record walleye weighed 9 lb. 15 oz. The bag limit is 10 walleye.

Channel Catfish:

There are a large number of these nocturnal feeders in Lake Powell. It is not unusual to catch one of these rolling fighters while fishing for other game fish. The lake record is 24 lbs. The bag limit is 25 channel catfish.

Black Crappie:

Lake Powell’s crappie have fallen off in the last few years, but these ‘calico bass’ are still plentiful. These fish spawn in April, May and June. There have been several 3 lb. crappies caught in the ends of the canyons. The bag limit is 10 fish.

Bluegill:

Though not as abundant as they once were, these fish are still being caught. These small fighting fish can weigh over a pound. There is no bag limit.

Green Sunfish:

Lake Powell has seen a decrease in the Green Sunfish as well as the Bluegill. There is no bag limit for these fish.
